Upper Mustang Trek opens the door to the region of Mustang, known as a mysterious place, and only recently opened for foreign travelers to visit. Mustang was once an independent kingdom called Lo and was part of a larger Tibetan empire. Here is an almost purely Tibetan culture, language, and religion. The trek of 15 days from Kathmandu will lead us to this enigmatic land of Tibetans in Nepal.

It is in the restricted region of Upper Mustang that this trek reaches and offers the visitor scenes of arid valleys, multi-colored canyons, yak caravans, and colorfully painted mud brick houses. The landscape is a desert wilderness because of where it lies in relation to the Annapurna Massif. This area is to the north-west and therefore is in the rain shadow receiving little of the rains most of Nepal gets during the monsoon season. Wonderful panoramic views of some of the major mountains are visible like Nilgiri (7061m), Annapurna (8091m) and Dhaulagiri (8167m). Although it lies in the highlands of Nepal it features the mixed snow-capped mountains and desert, and it is more akin to the high Tibetan plateau than to the typical sub-tropical highlands of the rest of Nepal. Situated behind the high Himalayas, this region is almost untouched by the tourist trade. And the Upper Mustang Trek has a lot to offer besides incredible views of mountains. Ancient solitary monasteries and small settlements are scattered throughout the landscape beckoning the visitor to explore the Tibetan Buddhist religion, and culture housed within both.
